No one is alien to the term Yandere. Series like Mirai Nikki, School Days or the longest-lived Higurashi have shown us the terrifying image of a character (mostly female) willing to kill for the being they love. Or, in the worst case scenario, kill that loved one so that no one will take it from them. And that figure generally bears the most disturbing countenance one can imagine.
The independent game Yandere Simulator captures the essence of this fascinating and dark character in an anime environment: a school. The player puts himself in the shoes of the beautiful, apathetic and mentally unstable Ayano Aishi, a high school student who has a crush on hers senpai Taro Yamada hers. Ayano has ten weeks to prevent other girls from getting too close to her beloved senpai and she will have to resort to any method to achieve this.
The player will be able to use various Yandere tactics, but will be free to choose the approach: Subtle or direct. The first includes pairing rivals with other boys, befriending them to intoxicate their friendly environment, damage their reputations and get them expelled, and even orchestrate kidnappings. This approach includes murder (the protagonist is a yandere, let’s not forget), but using stealth means to make the death of rivals look “accidental”.
The second approach will require Ayano to unleash all of her Yandere fury, taking her target head-on with a varied collection of weapons (kitchen knives, baseball bats, a circular saw, or a katana). Of course, Ayano must be careful not to be caught red-handed: The game penalizes you if you act carelessly, causing others to distrust the protagonist and that of her loved one, her senpai, to move away from her considering her dangerous. If that situation worsens, the game will end instantly.
The developer of this peculiar game, called YandereDev, has revealed that the first official demo is available to download and play. This announcement was made through his YouTube channel. We warn that the video has been marked as inappropriate due to its content and asks the viewer to think about it before watching it. In itself, the development of this project has been involved in controversy due to the violence and adult themes included in the game, to the point of having been banned on the streaming website Twitch.
