The successful and disastrous collaboration between Genshin Impact and KFC

Chinese developer miHoyo is already known worldwide for its hit open-world gacha game Genshin Impact. It was to be expected that at some point a Collaborative event between the Chinese video game mogul and a well-known global brand. And that happened earlier than expected, because at the end of February an event was announced available only for China in which Genshin Impact would join forces with Kentucky Fried Chicken to entertain several enthusiasts of the game.

The event started in early March, and it was a success from the start. Large numbers of players approached KFC’s designated locations to purchase the exclusive reward which included the purchase of Colonel Sanders’ marinated fried chicken. This reward was an exclusive Skin for the glider that the traveler uses in his adventures throughout the world, from Teyvat wearing the KFC colors. The event was planned to last until March 21st.

Unfortunately, the collaboration between miHoyo and KFC ended prematurely. The Chinese authorities were forced to intervene as the event attracted a number huge number of people, which went against the security protocols against the pandemic. Players formed long lines and crowds outside restaurants hoping to not only get the exclusive glider, but also some additional rewards, such as a unique recipe to use in the game and promotional pins with the image of Diluc and Noelle, two characters from the game.

This is not the first collaboration between KFC and a video game brand. For example, we can cite the popular Girls Frontline and Arknights, two popular games for smartphones.

These types of events are usually limited to the Chinese public, despite the fact that the player base of these titles is already distributed globally.
