September 9 marked 25 years since the launch of the console that changed the rules in the world of video games. In his time, he became the fiercest competitor Nintendo, and opened the doors to the Xbox. This is the first PlayStation, and these are the titles that caused us the most furor during the glorious era of this emblematic console.
Spyro the Dragon (1998)
One of the first Insomniac Game projects (the same as the recent Marvel’s Spiderman) and exclusive title of Sony’s flagship console. According to GamePro magazine, “Spyro is to the PlayStation what Banjo-Kazooie is to the Nintendo64.” The protagonist is a small purple dragon that spews fire from his jaws and must save his home, the Dragon Kingdom. It won over critics, receiving praise for its fun platform gameplay and graphics. The presentation and soundtrack were good too received, and it was considered the game that raised the standards of platform games at the time.
Resident Evil 2 (1998)
Another game that marked an era, both in its official release and today with its “remake” version. In addition to being an intense survival horror, the player could use two characters with different abilities and their own story for each one in an environment full of puzzles and enemies. Critics surrendered to this marvelous product of Capcom, praising its design, graphics, ambience, sound, and gameplay. It is a title that every video game fan and proud owner of the first Sony console possesses, and holds a special place in the hearts of all of us. The remake was an exceptional experience, but nothing beats this original version.
Metal Gear Solid (1998)
Developed by Konami and one of the most prolific creations of the legendary Hideo Kojima, this stealth game follows the adventures of Agent Solid Snake who infiltrates a nuclear weapons factory to stop terrorists. The enormous emphasis on stealth and dangerous situations that had to be avoided using the player’s ingenuity differentiated from other action titles, and was considered “the best game ever created.” Won a Guinness record for being “the most innovative use of a video game controller” during a fight with the Psycho Mantis and introduced the use of cinematics to tell a story, something that titles like Call of Duty took advantage of to this day.
Dino Crisis (1999)
Resident Evil, but with dinosaurs. That’s the way many referred to this title when it came out in the late 90s. The comparison is not that inaccurate, as Dino Crisis was created by Capcom. Even the story is relatively similar: a special agent named Regina is part of a team sent to an island to investigate the strange experiments taking place in a secret facility. Upon arrival, she discovers that the place is infested with dinosaurs and must make her way among the prehistoric beasts to survive and fulfill her mission. She stood out for the use of environments generated by a 3D graphics engine in real time and a more explicit representation in terms of visceral horror.
Silent Hill (1999)
This game became synonymous with horror, giving nightmares to the sensitive dupes who dared to play it. However, Silent Hill not only generated fear, but fascinated anyone with his dark atmosphere and gloomy story: Harry Mason goes into a remote town looking for his missing adopted daughter. On the way he will have than fighting a secret cult that seeks to resurrect an evil and ancient deity. The game was acclaimed worldwide, being considered a milestone for the genre of the survival horror. The use of psychological terror and the atmosphere provided a fresh new experience; leading the game to become a franchise and be adapted in movies, novels and comics. As a curious fact, the fog that enveloped the environments was added to disguise the limitations of the console’s graphics engine.
Medal of Honor (1999)
The Medal of Honor franchise fell almost into oblivion after being displaced by Call of Duty in opularity. It has been almost 8 years since his last title, but it all started with a title that gave the franchise its name. The player assumed the role of Lieutenant Jimmy Patterson (fictional historical figure), who executed the missions of the OSS during the last months of the Second World War. This first person shooter won the appreciation of the entire public for its gameplay, graphics, story, band sound and excellent artificial intelligence on the part of the enemies. And did we mention that Steven Spielberg wrote the story? Well yes, he did.
