On the occasion of Batman Day we present this list with our favorite retro video games starring the bat man. We will mention those who had us hours glued to the keyboard or command during our childhood. Batman is for many the most fascinating character in fiction; a vigilante shrouded in mystery whose ideals of Justice is mixed with personal revenge due to a past tragedy. Personally, he is my favorite hero and it has been great to be able to play him through digital adventures that we will name in this article.
1. Batman (1986)
Developed by Jon Ritman and Ocean Software.
This is the first Batman game for computers. With an isometric 3D design, the player must save Robin by collecting the parts of the Bat ship that are scattered by the Batcave. Its newest feature was that it allowed to save the game and start from a middle point if the player lost all their lives. The game went well received by critics and that led to the making of a sequel.
2. Batman: The Caped Crusader (1988)
Developed by Special FX Software Limited.
This second title makes up the trilogy of the first Batman games. Although they are not related, they are epoch-making and invaluable in the history of the batman.
The game represented an improvement in terms of graphics and style, turning into a comic-style arcade adventure. Each place in the game occupied its own panel, and when the player progressed to the next panel, the previous one was positioned behind, as if turning the pages of a magazine. This time, Batman was facing two villains from his gallery of enemies: The Penguin and the Joker. Batman could use punches, kicks, and his batarang to fight enemies and solve puzzles.
3. Batman: The Movie (1989)
Developed by Ocean Software.
With much more action and colors, the player was immersed in the universe created by Tim Burton that Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson starred. Batman had to go through five levels, each with a limited time and a life meter (Batman’s face at the bottom of the screen), and whose playstyle varied. The player could handle both vehicles from the movie (the Batmobile and the Batplane), solve puzzles in the Batcave, and face multiple enemies bare-knuckled to stop the Joker. This game was one of the first to be offered as a bundle along with a personal computer (The Batman Pack). It was considered as one of the best games adapted from a movie.
4. Batman Returns (1993)
Developed by Konami.
Despite being originally released in 1992 by several developers (each representing a different platform), the version that many of us played was the one that Konami developed for the SNES in 1993. This was a Final Fight beat’em up (with similar animation and graphics) in which Batman scrolled from left to right facing enemies using various tactics. At the end of each phase (there were seven in total) the player had to defeat a boss to advance to the next level. Despite criticism was not very welcoming, this is the game that marked the childhood of many, including myself.
5. The adventures of Batman and Robin (1994)
Developed by Konami.
Inspired by the Batman animated series (both in animation and designs), it was an action and platform game whose levels ended with the appearance of a villain whom Batman had to win. Among its novelties stood out the power to equip Batman with different weapons and devices, depending on the level and the challenges that the player had to get around. The game had a secret ending that was only unlocked if it was passed on maximum difficulty.
