Kantai Collection is one of the largest Japanese media franchises in the world. It started as a game that puts the user in the role of naval leader, leading a fleet of waifus representing various battle ships, to later expand with manga, anime and board games. And it served as a source of inspiration for the Azur Lane brand, a similarly-themed Chinese game.
The dilemma is that these days the use of female characters based on objects, animals or vehicles is frowned upon. There are various reasons why many activists attack anime or its derivatives, and in this case, Kantai Collection was the target of a self-proclaimed Japanese feminist, who accused the franchise of promoting pedophilia.
In her statements, @ minorit403 indicated that KanColle sexualizes girls, regardless of whether they are illustrations or fictional characters. The activist went on to argue that she found it unpleasant that other people did not find this morbid, and that those who distributed this content and consumed it were pedophiles.
The criticisms were immediate, and forced the feminist to return her private account to filter the attacks of various fans of the game and otaku. Among some of her messages, there was one that emphasized that she was stealing someone else’s intellectual property and could be punished.
A user who reminded the feminist that Azur Lane also had identical topics, but was blocked by her shortly after replying to her. Faced with such a reaction, the user called her a coward, and that she was only fleeing from those who contradicted her with solid arguments.
This is not the first time that a franchise like KanColle has been besieged by its game’s suggestive content. However, events like this usually end relatively quickly, without damaging KanColle in any significant way. Azur Lane has not been so lucky, as its developers have applied a very strong censorship due to complaints in their country of origin, something that has annoyed their players a lot.
