The Resident Evil franchise is considered one of the pillars of the survival horror genre in video games. This influence spread to the big screen when the first live-action Resident Evil movie was released, under the direction of Paul W.S. Anderson (who also directed the first Mortal Kombat movie). However, the story was not focused on the characters we already knew, but ended up being used as extras during all the films that followed the first one. In addition, the quality of the plot of these films declined considerably, something that disheartened Resident Evil fans.
This week Capcom and Constantin Film surprised everyone again when they announced that they would be producing a new live-action Resident Evil movie. This story would serve to restart the franchise’s film saga, and would focus on the original characters from the first two video games. The setting would be Raccoon City in 1998, during the first incidents that brought Chris Redfield and his sister Claire together with Jill Valentine and Leon Kennedy (each couple in their own story).
The director and screenwriter Johannes Roberts has been chosen as responsible for this project, and he stated that he was very excited to recreate the terrifying experience of the first two Resident Evil in this new film. Producer Robert Kulzer (who appeared on Resident Evil Afterlife and Retribution) explained that it was time to return to the roots of the series and explore the secrets of the Spencer Mansion and Raccoon City.
The cast has also been revealed: Kaya Scodelario (Claire Redfield), Hannah John-Kamen (Jill Valentine), Robbie Amell (Chris Redfield), Tom Hopper (Albert Wesker), Avan Jogia (Leon S. Kennedy) and Neal NcDonough (William Birkin).
Resident Evil has resurfaced after the remake of the second game in the franchise. Apart from series and movies (Netflix will produce a digitally animated feature film), the new installment Resident Evil Village will be released very soon on next-generation consoles.
