Azur Lane game is well known throughout the otaku world. In part, it is responsible for the phenomenon of the ‘battleship girls’, or battle ships turned into cute, sensual and statuesque waifus. It is available on IOS and Android; Its local version was released in 2017 (the same year it was also released in Japan), and its global version was released in in 2019. The player commands fleets made up of beautiful waifus inspired by WWII battle ships, and interacts with them to the point of being able to ‘marry’ them at some point in the game.
Azur Lane is one of the most popular porridge, but it has recently come under heavy censorship in China, the home country of its developer. Users have indicated that It’s all the work of the Chinese government, which has imposed strict moral rules for the type of content shown on Azur Lane. The first measure affected the character palette of the game, which lost 18 of its members. The reason is, apparently, the pronounced cleavage that these waifus exhibited.
The other censorship of the game resulted in the alteration of several images in the global version. In them, some of the waifus wear provocative bikinis, but with a new patch, these illustrations radically changed the attire of the characters. In some cases, the change is subtle, but in others it is quite noticeable and excessive.
This has greatly concerned the otaku gamer community, because in recent days something similar has happened with another popular Chinese game, from developer Mihoyo. Due to various complaints from local users, Mihoyo withdrew the special content they released for Honkai Impact 3rd, in the form of a video clip where the girls dance dressed in sensual bunny costumes. This caused outrage from the global player base, but the developer made up for it for the abrupt change. Still the unease is still palpable because of what happened with Azur Lane.
