The Work “Homecoming” is composed by Jeff Russo for the successful Netflix series “The Umbrella Academy” which ventures us into knowing the secrets of this group of superheroes who were adopted by Reginald Hargreeves from children, and who in the current era They reunite to deal with an apocalyptic threat.
The play is heard in the 1st episode of the first season when “Vanya” returns to the Umbrella house after a long time after the group had separated. The music tries to reflect the mysterious (for all the secrets it hides) and at the same time how fantastic this place can be (because it is the place where their powers were empowered).
The theme is structured in such a way that by sequentially arpeggiating the harmony, these objectives are achieved:
Cm | % | Bbm | % | Fm | % | E | % |
Cm | % | B | % | Ebm | % | D | % |
To achieve the objective of printing mystery, a chord tends to be carried towards another that generates tension. In the case of the work, this is seen in the first 2 chords, since since Cm is the first chord, what is expected to reaffirm the tonality is to address a minor diatonic chord, but Bbm does not belong to this category. Thus achieving a slight tension so as not to reach the dark.
Later on, a sequence of minor chords begins followed by a major chord separated by 1 semitone (Fm - E, Cm - B, Ebm - D) that take on the sensation of a second cadential substitute, addressing a dominant. This relationship is very interesting, since it makes us feel that music surprises us and is going to take us to a new universe. But in order not to lose attention, Jeff uses a “deceptive resolution.” And it is that if we wanted to solve the sequence “Fm - E” we would use the chord “A”, but it does not happen like that and makes a jump to another minor chord, to start another sequence (Cm - B) and resolve again disappointingly (Ebm) , making a magical and surprising progression.
These elements are widely used in the musicalization of movies and series that have to do with superheroes.
Successes.
