The successful series “The Boys” takes place in a world where superheroes are corrupt and abuse their power and status, but have managed to create before the world an image of champions of justice. Faced with this situation, a group of people decided to stop them being aware of all that this means.
The series begins with the pursuit of an armored truck that has just committed an assault, causing great chaos in the city. The musical theme that accompanies this scene is called “Truck robbery” composed by Christopher Lennertz, a work that achieves 2 very clear objectives: to follow the images of the scene and musically the elite group of this justice league called “the seven” .
The main motif of the theme begins with a perfect 5th, an interval that, because it is a perfect consonance, prints greatness in the musical discourse (used in the theme “Superman” by John Williams). The harmony that accompanies the main motif of the song is quite simple but effective, basically it is in the key of Em:
Em | C |
This motif is executed several times, separated by several measures of Em, and it is in these transition measures where it is used to use mysterious textures and motifs in Phrygian mode (E - F - G - A - B - C - D -E) , so that being one of the darkest, it reveals something hidden, vicious, corrupt. All this in contrast to the main motif, and thus narrating the atmosphere of the series musically.
This main motif is heard when “Queen Maeve” walks through the windows, then when she is inside the Truck. After a few moments the motif is heard again when “Homelander” uses her laser sight and when she takes down the last enemy.
The important thing about having a musical motif that adapts very well to what the series reflects to become the common thread for the series’ aural narrative.
