The Last Terminator Movie, Terminator: Dark Fate, gives us a tremendous arrangement of the iconic song from the series to represent one of the characters in the film. This arrangement is made by DJ Tom Holkenborg better known as “Junkie XL”
The work is called “my name is Dani” and before making an arrangement it is important to become aware of who or what you are going to represent in your work, in order to choose its texture correctly. Here the character to be represented musically is “Dani”, she is a Mexican who will be involved in this terrible situation, being the target of the Terminator Rev-9.
The music seeks to reflect her nationality with the use of an acoustic guitar both in melody and in accompaniment, and to give it all that burden of what has been lived is that a slow tempo (ballad) is used with a quite reflective character. Hence, the accompaniment is arpeggiated (playing the chord note by note and letting them sound) while using the following chords:
Am (add9) | Fmaj7 (# 11) | Dm7 (13) | Am (add9) | E7 | x2
Speaking a little more about the accompaniment, the guitar has for its standard tuning to the first string tuned in “E” and the second in “B”, this is used by the arranger to give new colors to each chord, as follows way:
Am9 (A - C - “E” - “B”)
Fmaj7 (# 11) (F - A - C - “E” - “B”)
Dm7 (13) (D - F - A - C - B) * here use B, but without using the open string
E7 (E - G # - “B” - D) * here note B does not add a new color
Finally, the best part is the melodic outline of the iconic main theme (composed by Brad Fiedel), since in each musical phrase he takes the first notes of the original and ends in a different way to show that “this is another story.” In that sense, it effectively manages to convey everything that this new Terminator: Dark Fate film contains.
One last detail that I want to express and that does not detract from the tremendous musical work that was done is that, Junkie XL “He is not a Guitarist” and that affects a lot in the execution of the work, you can make up in more editing, you will really notice your lack of study and practice especially on the guitar. Of course the entire soundtrack only has one song with the acoustic guitar, but still hire a guitarist (pay whim). Please be very careful with that detail.
Successes over there.
