Soul Pixar Joe Gardner Disney plus Musical analysis

Soul Collard Greens and Cornbread strut

“Soul” is an animated film that tells the story of Joe Gardner, a music teacher who dreams of having a career as a jazz musician, who does not miss the opportunity that life gives him to play alongside the legendary Dorothea Williams.

The song “Collard greens and cornbread strut” sounds like a shout of joy from Joe after being accepted to play with Dorothea. The work blends very well with the euphoric words of our pianist, Work that basically has a section where the piano can freely expand with the following harmony:

| B - B (6) (9) | B7 | x4 | A7 | G # 7 (b9) | G7 | F # 7 |

While we see how the emotion that overcomes Joe, makes him be more clueless on the street, added to the fact that he is talking on his cell phone. the scenes give us images of how he saves himself from falling on a pile of bricks; being run over by a car; slip on a banana and get hit by a motorcycle. It is interesting to see here that for the music to coincide with the end of the sequence, the first 2 bars are repeated 2 more times:

| B - B (6) (9) | B7 | x6 | A7 | G # 7 (b9) | G7 | F # 7 |

Finally the work ends with a piano phrasing and a drumbeat that coincides with Joe’s fall into a Hollow causing his inevitable passage to the afterlife. The soundtrack of this film is a great work by Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross
