Chapter 8 of the 4th season of “Rick and Morty” called “The Vat of Acid Episode”, tells us what Morty experienced when he uses a device invented by Rick to record a moment in life where we could return in case everything is not it comes out as we would like.
In one of those situations, Morty meets a girl with whom he begins a love affair. The interesting thing here is that according to the creators, this scene was not going to last long but at the end of editing the chapter they realized that they needed more minutes, so they decided to lengthen this scene, however not being able to have the voice actors, they decided that this whole sequence is supported only by music.
The work is in the key of B major (B - C # - D # - E - F # - G # - A # - B), a scale that is very luminous and tends to connect with the emotions that lie in the heart. Let’s see phrase by phrase the Harmony moves:
| B - Bmaj7 | B6 - Bmaj7 | B - Bmaj7 | B6 - Bmaj7 |
This option is very interesting since to avoid accompanying during the 4 measures with the B chord, it combines with Bmaj7 (which would be the quality of the I chord of the tonality when harmonized in sevenths) and the B6 chord (which is the replacement chord Bmaj7 when you want to lighten your feeling). Also in this section the main reason is presented. The work continues as follows:
| B - Bmaj7 | B6 - Bmaj7 | Amaj7 | G # |
To give variety to the new melodic motif, he uses the Amaj7 chord which is a modal exchange with the minor key of B, it is at that moment where it is announced that not everything is happiness in the relationship. And not to mention G # 7 (Secondary dominant) which is an invitation to unleash the drama, however it stops this sensation by making it resolve deceptively to the B chord.
| B - Bmaj7 | B6 - Bmaj7 | B - Bmaj7 | B7 |
The routine is a trigger for conflict in a relationship, this is represented very well because it maintains the initial harmony but changes the melodic motif. Finishing this section with a secondary dominant B7 of the IV degree and that this time will not solve disappointingly:
| E | D # 7 | G # m | G ° 7 | F # sus4 | F # |
When solving the B7 to E, the rupture in the relationship is consummated, to then reflect “the inevitable pain that accompanies you” with another secondary dominant that resolves effectively (D # 7 - G # m7) and a diminished chord as a bridge to V grade (G ° 7 - F # sus4). Finally, after some time of reflection, an attempt to give yourself a chance is shown. Returning to the main reason for the work:
| B - Bmaj7 | B6 - Bmaj7 | B - Bmaj7 | B6 - Bmaj7 |
How about a musical adventure composed by Ryan Elder, who follows the scenes of this episode very well. In fact, the sequence has another moment of greater drama and then returns to this tremendous composition
