Prison School 監獄 学園 is an anime that takes us to the Hachimitsu female institute which houses more than 1000 women governed by Draconian laws and regulations imposed by the “Underground Student Council” who punish any misdemeanor with a type of prison that the school owns. The soundtrack is composed by Kōtarō Nakagawa and the song “Vice President” that represents Meiko Shiraki 白木 芽 衣 子 (who is in charge of guarding the prisoners during their stay) has 2 very marked sections that oscillate between rude, sadistic, determined (first section ), contrasted to the delicate, shy, beautiful and tender (second section)
The first section has a progression where you clearly feel a “Cliche line” which is basically moving a voice from the first chord in a chromatic way to create a tense but attractive atmosphere. However, this technique is usually used between the 8th and the 5th of the chord to avoid crashing with the 3rd, but Nakagawa ventures to go from the 5th to the 3rd as follows
Cm | Cm (b5) | Cm (add11) | C |
This genius produces tension thanks to the voice that moves G - Gb - F - E, the latter being the third of the C major chord, but if we start in C minor? this creates a fairly effective progression for what you want to represent. Not counting the melody, which further reinforces the concept The second section changes the character of the work and everything becomes more digestible, all within the key of Cm which is good to mark the aforementioned contrast of both sections:
Cm | Eb | Fm | Cm
A detail before finishing is that this work is so good that it was used in other scenes where Meiko does not appear, an epic is the moment of friction between Hana and Kiyoshi in the infirmary that we say was the one that made me decide to do the analysis.
