In episode 22 of the second season of the anime “Nanatsu no Taizai: Imashime no Fukkatsu” an epic battle takes place between Escanor (Member of the 7 deadly sins) against Estarossa (Member of the 10 commandments). This scene is accompanied by the theme “[104eyes-29ca2] suite-2 楽 章”, composed by Hiroyuki Sawano to represent Escanor.
It is worth mentioning that this work was edited to achieve a good impasto with the images, and this is correct when it comes to musicalizing. In general one can use the composition as it was recorded, one can make an arrangement or extract the parts of one or more works and join them in a single musical movement.
The play begins Estarossa receives the cut in the chest without realizing it. The first section of the song feels the key of E minor with a double bass movement interspersing the tonic and the fifth of the chord (E and B). This is very favorable because it allows the other instruments to use other voices and does not deviate the tonal center. To make this chord bigger, some string staccatos are used with the notes D (minor 7th of E), A (just 11th of E) and B. and if we add an acute melody that adds the F # (9th major of E) will result in the Em7 (9) (11) chord. In other words, a “chord with all its possible tensions.”
Em7 (9) (11) = E - G - B - D - F # - A
We then move on to Escanor’s Discourse, and it should be noted that the work plays the main melody just after he says “And who decided!”. In the original work the first section lasts 8 bars, however here only the first 4 are used so that this second section gives you all the grandeur that the speech needs. This melody is played by Cornos, being an excellent decision since its sound is powerful, majestic, solemn, opulent. Thus enhancing everything embodied in the first section since harmony is maintained.
To go from there to the plane where an unstoppable Escanor is seen ready to launch his attack “Cruel Sun”. In this third section the original work is cut again, since it falls in intensity as if to gain momentum and resume with more force. But this is not what the scene needs, so it is quite wise to leave that part of the play. Musicalizing this scene with the section of greater intensity that the work has and that has the following Harmony.
| C - D | Em | x4
The last section accompanies the moment in which Estarossa receives the attack of Escanor, and here no cut was made in the original music, and it is musically this section is the prelude to the end, the becoming of the inevitable. The music ends right with the outbreak in the mountains. It should be mentioned that Hiroyuki Sawano has to his credit great soundtracks such as Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on titan), Ao no Exorcist, Kill la Kill, Mobile Suite Gundam etc.
