Nanatsu no Taizai - Death of Escanor

7deadlysins

Nanatsu no Taizai, is an anime that tells the story of a group of the squad of knights known as the seven deadly sins and how they act as the protectors of Britannia from oppression at the same time that they seek redemption for sins that gave them their titles. At the end of episode 20 of the season “Dragon’s Judgment”, it shows us the death of Escanor, one of the members of this group and who musically follows the sequence of images very well.

The music explodes in intensity the moment Merlin launches to give Escanor the last kiss, knowing that he would be hurt by how dangerous it is to be around him. However she wishes to have a mark of the only man who loves her. Using violins for the melody and in a minor key, it is possible to capture the sadness of the moment:

| F | E | Am | C - E | x2

Escanor’s words after Merlin’s action are very poetic, asking God that one day someone will appear who can receive her love, which, as he says, is a “Solitary Love”. It is correct that the band change the initial melodic motif for a more dynamic one but keeping the heartbreaking of the moment:

| F | G | Am | C | x2

Finally Escanor is becoming particles of fire before the inpotent gaze of his companions, and here the genius of Hlroyuki Sawano, of using the drums to represent that sequence, breaking the accompanying rhythm that he had by a circle of drum beats that were spread by the following harmony:

| F | G | Am | C | | F | G | Am |

And once the soundtrack disappears, it abruptly turns off, closing with a piano that will play the last bars of this great work.
