Left 4 Dead 2 is a cooperative first person shooter where you will have to escape the city during a zombie apocalypse. In this installment you can take the role of Nick, Ellis, Rochelle and Coach, and depending on the campaign you can also use the old characters Louis, Francis, Bill and Zoey.
At the beginning of each campaign a work is heard that has 2 sections, the first one connects us with the environment of the place, this melody being arranged in a different way for each campaign. And a second section that is always the same. This section has an air of desolation, but determined to fight hard for the little hope we have of surviving such a terrible event.
This second section achieves its objective a lot in the first place because of the speed of the work which is approximately 64 bpm where each pulse is subdivided being emphasized by the bass and the ride of the drums. This can be associated with walking safely but very attentive to your surroundings. Basically a good groove can get you into the concept of the game immediately.
The Melody of the work is in charge of achieving more refinement of the player’s emotions, and for this they use the scale of “A lydian dominant (b9) (# 9) (b13)” which is made up of the following notes:
A - Bb - B # - C # - D # - E - F - G - A
As we can see, this scale is unconventional since from the beginning it only has 9 different sounds (1 more than the regular diatonic scales). but in its structure it has elements that will connect with the emotions that the game seeks to make us feel.
Let’s start by mentioning that this scale has the characteristic note of the Phrygian mode (A - Bb - C - D - E - F - G), which is the 2nd minor (in this case Bb), and not only that, but several sounds of this scale that make the characteristic note work correctly (especially the lower 3 ° C that we will find as the enharmony of B #). and it is known that the Phrygian mode is the darkest of the minor modes, this is associated with the decadent and desolate environment.
On the other hand, we have that the Lydian mode (A - B - C # - D # - E - F # - G # - A) is the brightest there is, and this is due to the augmented 4 ° (D #) in a larger environment (which is defined by the 3rd major of the scale). If we compare this modality with the scale of the work, we see that it has the characteristic note and 3 more sounds in common (among them obviously the 3rd major), which somehow give a small outline of the lydian, such as the presence of a little light, a little hope to cling to in order to survive.
Finally, Harmony is basically implicit, it is not played, hence it is practically imparted by the fundamentals of the bass that follow the following sequence:
| A | % | D # | D # - C # | B # - Bb | A | D # | C # - Bb |
To complement this analysis I will leave the names of the works that are part of the beginning of each campaign and that have this second section: ** Dead Easy ** (Dead Center), ** Death is a Carousel ** (Dark Carnival), * * Died on the Bayou ** (Swamp Fever), ** O ‘Sweet Death ** (Hard Rain) and ** South of Human ** (The Parish).
Successes
