The epic chapter 3 of Game of Thrones 8th season gave us moments loaded with a lot of emotionality and the music (composed by Ramin Djawadi) tells the facts of it very well, in this adventure it shows us a work that represents the “King of the Night “in all its level and which I will go on to comment on details that caught my attention. This work lasts approximately 9 min and musically follows the path of the “king of the night” very well towards his meeting with Bran, the section that I decided to analyze begins when the two are face to face.
The melody is an interval of 3 minor (C - Eb) that in itself is a melancholic, reflective, depressive interval etc etc if we play it loose, more, in the accompaniment specifically on the bass we first hear a “C” which is what logical to highlight the tonality of the work, then as the second sound we hear a “B” on the bass, which crashes directly with the C of the melody, putting on the table the sound with the greatest musical tension, the 2nd minor, representing thus all the emotional charge of the moment.
To maintain this feeling of discomfort the bass plays “A” and this is enough to achieve this since, considering the context, this note belongs to the melodic scale of C however. It uses it in the opposite way to how this scale was developed (at first it was advisable to follow the path G - A - B - C, to ascend and C - Bb - Ab - G to descend). To then play the “B” on the bass again, and comment on what is happening.
What follows next is to create tension but no longer towards discomfort, but rather towards the resolution of the moment, that is why it maintains the melody and gives rhythmic movement to the accompaniment Cm (add11) - Gm (add11) - Fm (add11) - Gm (add11).
Finally, to show the peak moment of the triumph of the king of the night, another of the musical motifs that were heard with more presence until reaching this moment, maintaining the chord progression, increasing the intensity and culminating suddenly with the appearance of Arya. .
It is quite an adventure to enjoy such good musical work developed in the series, hence the important thing to know what sensations the combinations of notes produce to achieve works as effective as this one.
