Soundtrack Análisis musical Doom patrol DC

Doom patrol theme

Doom Patrol is a series based on the meta-humans from DC comics, who got their powers through tragic events and are usually rejected by society. Living like this in the Chief’s mansion to protect himself from the outside world. The soundtrack is composed by Clint Mansell & Kevin Kiner, and much of their work is based on arranging the main theme of the series as the scene calls for it. This has a very good impact on the viewer, as they audibly perceive the presence of the team (thanks to the main melody) and the environment where the events take place (determined by the arrangement).

This Work is harmonically a circle of 4 chords in the key of D minor:

Dm | % | C | % | Bb | % | Gsus2 | % |

It is worth highlighting that way of closing the circle with the IVsus2 to address the Im, thus creating a form of plagal cadence that musically produces a not so obvious closure and even so to speak unsatisfactory, and that reflects a lot of how this team is.

Another element that has a great impact on the listener is the jump of 5 ° diminished descending that occurs from the 2nd bar to the 3rd bar (from Bb - E, also called a tritone because it is made up of 3 tones) and is that in the past This interval was associated with the Devil, for attributing a sinister sound to it, so much so that in the church the musician who sang said interval was excommunicated or punished, considering it as a cursed interval. Range that fits perfectly to represent the Doom Patrol.

This work has many variants both rhythmically (the introduction is in 3/4 and the ending is a 4/4 arrangement), melodically, and sonically (sometimes the voice makes the melody, sometimes a guitar, etc.), that with just keeping that sequence of chords and the interval of 5 ° diminished descending, we would have infinite ways to adapt the work to a particular context.
