The song “Die reisenden 1 (travelers 1), composed by Ben Frost for the hit Netflix series” Dark “, is very curious because it is made in such a way that it could naturally group any specific number of notes, and how it represents It is obvious to travelers at first to expect that the number of notes to group would be 33 because it is the number of years they skip (to the past or future) when they cross the wormhole in the caves.
But to my surprise, the number of notes grouped per cycle adds up to 34, making me feel like there is “An error in the matrix”, a failure that would be solved by removing a single note but, which note? It was not until I saw the last chapter of the entire series, that I could understand how to find that answer.
To begin, I will describe the work: we have pure notes that last 1 beat and that outline a specific chord of the key of G minor, in the following way and avoiding possible tensions:
16 pulses for Gm (G - Bb - D)
9 pulses for Ebmaj7 (Eb - G - Bb - D)
9 pulses for F (F - A - C)
34 total pulses
These beats are sub-grouped as follows, and this is the genius by which one can naturally hit any set of notes:
5 + 5 + 3 + 3 = 16 pulses for Gm
5 + 4 = 9 pulses for Ebmaj7
4 + 5 = 9 pulses for F
From here we see that the pulses of Eb and F have the same quantity but grouped as if they were seen in a mirror, that is a key to associate them with the worlds of Adam (Eb) and Eve (F) since it represents in some way the duality of human nature (Everything appears in opposite pairs. But that’s wrong - HG Tannhaus).
Also in key of G minor if I start to insert both chords (Ebmaj7 - F - Ebmaj7 - F etc) I would have an infinite loop without resolution, since to conclude this situation we have to go to the Gm chord. The latter makes me intuit that Gm would be like the world of Origin Finally, the solution to this set of 34 notes is to prevent the event that triggered everything from happening, this would be to get the last note of Gm in order to obtain my series of 33 notes that I search from the beginning of the series.
The soundtrack should reflect as much as possible the scene or the concept of the film. With this work Ben Frost made me live the whole “Dark” series musically and we may be facing an epic masterpiece or in any case I have a lot of musical imagination.
Successes
- Note: if we consider all the notes that are played we would have the following chords as a result: Gm add (9) (11) = G - Bb - D - A - C, Ebmaj7 (# 11) (13) = Eb - G - Bb - D - A - C and F add (9) (11) = F - A - C - G - Bb.
