“Cobra Kai” is a series that tells us how the lives of “Karate Kid” characters Daniel LaRusso and Jhonny Lawerence continued, 34 years after their confrontation in the martial arts tournament. In chapter 2 of the 2nd season, both characters decide according to their particular philosophy to put a great test on their students, this process is set to music by the play “Like a Dance” composed by “Leo Birenberg” & “Zatch Robinson”.
This Work tries to maintain the flavor of the 80’s by using electronic sounds, for essentially having a tempo that invites dance (that’s why it was very popular to go to discos) and although it was not always like that, include a solo of solid and imposing guitar.
The harmony of the work is in key of D minor (D - E - F - G - A - Bb - C - D), the introduction of the work seeks to quickly install in the tone:
Dm | G | Bb | Dm |
Although before this progression there are many bars of Dm, we must mention 2 very important elements, in the first place it is that although the minor scale is associated with melancholic, reflective or something similar. It is the movement of the song that can change that and make it determined, passionate. The second is the use of the G chord (G - B - D), which comes from the melodic minor scale of the tonality (D - E - F - G - A - B - C # - D), this chord tends to do more luminous the tonality. To become the first section of the work that has the following progression:
! [disciples in the cement truck] (/ img / cobrakailikeadance3.jpg)
Am | Bb | C | G | Am | Bb | C | % |
If a section begins with another grade that is not “Im”, it gives us the taste that it will inevitably get there, And it is precisely what happens in the scene! We see the disciples trying to overcome the challenge imposed by su sensei (target that is musically represented by the Dm chord). but not achieve it yet. That is why the Dm chord is not heard in the progression, since it means achieving the goal.
Hence the importance of creating an effective introduction, that there is no doubt about the tonality, so that when listening to that Am chord makes us feel that need to reach Dm. However, after much effort the disciples cannot achieve the goal, and the work is suddenly cut off. Trying this task again implies that the music starts all over again, the introduction, the first section, but in this second attempt the objective is achieved and that is reflected in the new section of the work:
! [disciples practicing] (/ img / cobrakailikeadance4.jpg)
Dm | Bb | C | Dm | Am | Bb | C | % | Dm |
When the Dm chord is played as a continuation of the first section it is associated with the victory of the disciple through effort and discipline, now a skill has improved and has become stronger in body and spirit. Hence, that hard-hitting, solid guitar solo is a perfect match for the energy that rises from progressing on the martial arts path.
