If you asked me what is my favorite genre of anime, without thinking I would answer: ‘Those that deal with everyday life’. To be specific, I mean the anime genre popularized as ‘Slice of life’. They are series in which not much happens (as described by those who detest and criticize them), but there is a taste in that that anime with action and fantasy can rarely recreate. And these are 10 titles that stand out in this genre.
1. K-on!
Although it gives the appearance of being a musical anime, the plot revolves around the girls who make up a light music club and their daily anecdotes.
2. Non Non Biyori
An anime set in the countryside. The protagonist is a very lively girl who lives each day as if it were a great adventure.
3. Nichijou
This is one of the finest animated comedies of all time. Three high school students live their friendship and share particular tastes that make them stand out from the rest of their class. The sober humor and the different comic sequences that include other characters apart from the main trio is one of its strong points. And its animation is supreme.
4. Mushishi
Although some otakus find it soporific, Mushishi is the perfect example of a peculiar mix of genres. This series follows the life of a paranormal investigator dealing with nature spirits in the 19th century. It is a visual and philosophical experiment made anime.
5. Aria The Animation
Many might mistake this series for science fiction because its setting is the planet Mars, many years in the future. A young woman arrives on this planet, which has been transformed to allow humans to inhabit it, to become a gondolier.
6. Shirobako
This series is a love letter to those who work in the Japanese animation industry. It illustrates the comings and goings of five girls who promised at school to work together to produce an anime. As adults, they achieve their dream by working together in an animation studio.
7. Yuru Camp
The wonderful thing about Slice of Life animes is that they can cover a lot of varied topics. The same applies to manga and anime. In this case, the plot centers on a group of camping enthusiasts, who are dedicated to visiting various real places in Japan and experiencing nature.
8. Uchuu Kyoudai
With the largest number of episodes (99), this series stands out for being a story of overcoming that has two brothers as protagonists. They both dream of becoming astronauts, but only one of them stays on that course when they become adults.
9. Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu
As such, this series is the clear example of the Slice of Life genre combining with other genres. To begin with, the events that take place in the series often do not follow a chronological order, and the fact that the protagonists are students who are part of a club does not guarantee that their experiences are very common. A cult work, like its opening.
10. Hinamatsuri
A gangster and a girl with psychic powers come together to face the harsh urban reality of Japan. This is actually one of the best action comedies in the genre. Aside from the action and humor, the plot provides excellent moments for some of the supporting characters, with strong messages for the viewers.
