Saint Seiya, known to the vast majority of Westerners as Knights of the Zodiac, introduces us to a group of orphaned boys who have been chosen to become Saints and protect the goddess Athena. The Saints wear armor that protects their bodies and resonates with the inner energy that inhabits them, the cosmos. Each Saint has an armor according to his guardian constellation, and there are different materials, which vary according to the Saint’s rank: Bronze, silver, gold, etc. There are more powerful and mystical versions, reserved for those who manage to reach the highest ranks, close to the gods.
Originally, there are five Saints who become the main guardians of Athena: Seiya of Pegasus (the leader), Shiryu of Dragon (the honorable), Hyoga of Swan (the cool head), Shun of Andromeda (the sensitive one), and Ikki de Féniz (the renegade). These boys have survived countless battles against the most dangerous enemies of the goddess of war and wisdom. And they have managed to rise to the higher ranks, to the point of wearing divine armor.
However, there was a sixth bronze Saint: Mei de Coma Berenices. This Saint appears in the novel Gigantomachia, whose authors are Tatsuya Hamazaki and Masami Kurumada. In the novel, Mei is the first born of the group of one hundred children sent to the Shrine to become a Saint. But unlike the others, Mei stays in Sicily, his training ground. Her teacher is Mask of Death, the golden Saint of Cancer. In the novel, Mei faces Typhon, the last titan Gaia, in a fight to the death.
Mei wears Berenice’s Hair armor. This is black, whose material seems to be able to absorb light. Also, it is not made of bronze, silver, or gold. The object is in the shape of a slender woman with loose hair wearing a tiara and crowns-like shields on her shoulders. Mei fights using strong, sharp threads as strong as orichalcum, and her signature technique is called Lost Children.
It is worth mentioning that Mei is the true son of Mitsumasa Kido, and therefore, heir to his fortune. Mei renounced his position and his legacy to become a Saint upon learning that the other children of the orphanage would be sent to various places in the world to train according to the will of the Sanctuary.
