The Monogatari series is one of the most popular and beloved anime series, but it also figures in the section of the most confusing to appreciate. One otaku took the liberty of developing a guide to see the entire series, without risking being disoriented in the middle of a marathon.
Monogatari is the brainchild of author Nisio Isin, whose story follows a rehabilitated vampire and his encounters with other mythical entities. The story expands as it progresses, including new characters, enemies, myths, and waifus. The series was adapted into anime by the Shaft studio, and the quality of the animation along with its complex dialogue has made it a jewel of the otaku repertoire.
However, the problem that Monogatari has is discovering in what order to see the different deliveries that compose it. This is due to the differences between anime and light novels, not to mention that the former is not produced in chronological order. This has discouraged and confused many new otakus who want to enjoy such a legendary animated work.
So an otaku got down to work and drew up two guides to see Monogatari in order. The first is in chronological order (great for rewatching in a marathon), and the second is in broadcast order (which is carefully crafted to appreciate the series’ excellent and robust narrative).
Chronologically, Monogatari should be viewed in the following order:
Kizumonogatari (Parts I-III),
Nekomonogatari Black,
Bakemonogatari,
Nisemonogatari,
Monogatari Series Second Season (Mayoi Jiangshi and Shinobu Time),
Owarimonogatari (Shinobu Mail),
Second Season (Tsubasa Tiger),
Owarimonogatari (Ougi Formula, Sodachi Riddle, Sodachi Lost),
Second Season (Nadeko Medusa, Hitagi End),
Tsukimonogatari,
Koyomimonogatari (Nothing and End),
Owarimonogatari 2,
Zuko Owarimonogatari,
Hanamonogatari.
The other way to watch Monogatari is to respect the order of transmission of all deliveries:
Bakemonogatari,
Nisemonogatari,
Nekomonogatari Black,
Monogatari Series Second Season,
Hanamonogatari,
Tsukimonogatari,
Owarimonogatari,
Koyomimonogatari,
Kizumonogatari (Parts I-III),
Owarmonogatari 2,
Zuko Owarimonogatari.
And watching Kizumonogatari movies before Koyomimonogatari is recommended to keep up with the story.
Before using the guides, it is noted that the chronological is recommended for staunch fans of the series, who have already seen the installments and have a better understanding of the narrative. The second guide (transmission order) is the starting point for those new to Monogatari, and allows you to enjoy the solid plot it has, despite not maintaining a chronological order.
