The term ‘shounen’ has always been associated with action anime like Dragon Ball or HunterxHunter. However, shounen covers more genres, all aimed at young people, among which are romance, isekai, mechas, sports, etc. 2020 had several anime of this type, but here we present those new installments of shonen anime.
1. Kakushigoto
After the death of his wife, the mangaka Kakushi Gotou devotes himself completely to raising his daughter Hime while he dedicates himself to drawing his manga, which is his main source of income. As Hime grows up, Kakushi becomes obsessed with preventing her from discovering that it is her job to draw adult comic manga.
2. Jibaku Shonen Hanako-kun
Nene Yashiro has proposed to summon Hanako, the famous urban legend who griefs in the bathrooms of her school. When he succeeds, he discovers that Hanako is a boy on a mission to battle supernatural threats to the balance between the human and spirit worlds. Nene ends up spiritually connected to Hanako, and becomes her assistant in the fight against the dark forces behind her school.
3. Jujutsu Kaisen
Yuji itadori studies in high school with great aptitude for sports. However, he chooses to join the Occult Research Club so that he can hang out and visit his grandfather who is admitted to the hospital. When Yuji comes into contact with a cursed object, his fellow club members try the impossible to prevent the spirits drawn by his power from destroying the school. Yuji decides to swallow the object to use his powers and be able to defend his friends, changing his life forever.
4. Tonikaku Kawai
Adapted from the popular manga of the same name, this anime is part of the original Crunchyroll collection. The protagonist is a very bright and diligent boy, named Nasa Yuzaki, who is saved from a fatal accident by an enigmatic girl. Nasa asks him to be in love with her, but the young woman replies that he will accept only if he promises to marry her. Nasa accepts without hesitation. Finally, when he reaches 18 years of age, Tsukasa Tsukuyumi (the name of the mysterious young woman) reappears in Nasa’s life ready to marry him.
5. Yuukoku no Moriarty
Before becoming the nemesis of the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes, William James Moriarty invested his time and his razor-sharp wit advising major criminal activities in the UK. William and his brother Louis orchestrate the murder of the cruel relative of his adoptive father, as part of a larger play to attack the corrupt system of the country where they live and gradually destroy it.
6. Maou-jou from Oyasumi
Princess Syalis is a prisoner in a castle, owned by a powerful demon king. But, instead of sleeping peacefully like any captive princess, Syalis dedicates herself to turning the place where she is held upside down, in order to fall asleep with her.
