Traveling to other countries includes the unpleasant experience that they confiscate some of the things that you take with you, or that you bring back. Beyond the annoyance of losing something that was a valuable souvenir of the place you visited or a new item for a collection that you own, it is the anxiety of not knowing what will happen to what was taken from you at customs. Well, at least in Thailand we know what happens to confiscated anime merchandise.
The Narcotics Control Office in Bangkok, Thailand, auctioned a huge amount of products related to various famous anime franchises, such as Naruto, Dragon Ball, One Piece, Kamen Rider, Transformers, etc. This merchandise is the result of several confiscations during anti-drug operations at the airport. The inventory of the auctioned reached 300 units, all valued at 1.5 million Thai baths (approximately 50 thousand dollars).
The most valuable item in the seized collection was a life-size statue of Luffy, which was sold to a One Piece anime enthusiast for 111,000 Thai baht ($ 3,700), nearly four times its original value.
The auction was carried out following all the security protocols against Covid-19 (temperature control, use of masks and disinfectants, etc.). The reason for this event was revealed by the Minister of Justice, Somsak Thepsuthin, who indicated that all the items in the auction were categorized as unsuitable for storage. If this happened here, would you be willing to dump your wallet at a customs auction?
