One of the new anime for 2021 comes from the mind of author Asato Asato, who began writing the light novel 86: Eighty Six without thinking that she would amass a huge fan base. The series began its publication in 2017, through the ASCII Media Works publisher. The novel already has eight compilation volumes for sale as of today.
During an interview with the author shortly after publication of her novel began, she inadvertently revealed the source of inspiration for creating her debut feature. Asato said that her entire family was a lover of the anime Mecha, something that she also inherited. Her likes included tragic video games, such as Black, Matrix, and Final Fantasy Tactics. Added to that is the only shoujo anime she saw as a child: Magic Knight Rayearth.
But her spark of inspiration came when she watched a news story chronicling the drone attack in the Middle East. Asato combined all of the aforementioned elements to form 86: Eighty Six, which she entered in a contest that she ended up winning. The author joked that she initially thought her creation was not intended to become a light novel.
