Yahoo News showed the shocking results of a survey on live-action adaptations of anime and manga. The poll was conducted in manga and anime mecca, Japan, and covered fans of varying ages (up to 6 years). The survey sought to find out which anime or manga would the otakus like to see turned into live-action.
To everyone’s surprise, the vast majority of respondents answered “None.” Meanwhile, titles like Kimetsu no Yaiba, Shingeki no Kyojin and Jujutsu Kaisen. These results are linked to the disastrous adaptations of popular series such as Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure or the aforementioned Shingeki no Kyojin.
Another reason for the rejection of live-action is the existence of aberrations created by Hollywood, such as the infamous Dragon Ball: Evolution. Another film tragedy was Netflix’s failed version of Death Note, which only had one positive aspect: Willem Dafoe as Ryuk.
In sum, the greatest criticism of live-action adaptations is the marked tendency of filmmakers to try to experiment by detaching themselves from the concept of the original material. In some cases, like Rurouni Kenshin or Gintama, the final product has been decent, avoiding being burned at the stake by otakus.
