As part of Japanese popular culture, many holidays are celebrated either officially or unofficially. These generally obey the rule of pronunciation of the date celebrated in Japanese, although those holidays of the world calendar also count.
This is the case of National Cat Day, which is celebrated almost everywhere in the world, and seeks to promote the adoption of stray cats. In other places, it’s more of a party honoring feline companions who are part of the lives of countless people. In Japan, this day (February 22 according to their calendar) was chosen by the Executive Committee of Cat Day in 1978, since the pronunciation of the date sounds “nyan nyan nyan” (meow meow meow). This was the main factor in the vote that the Committee organized to choose the date.
Cat and otaku enthusiasts celebrate this day with photos and illustrations alluding to cats. That includes waifus or characters with feline characteristics or wearing accessories that give them the appearance of an adorable kitten. In social networks it is celebrated using the hashtag # 猫 の 日 with which users post photos and drawings. Here we show you some of those visual displays of feline affection.
