Japanese website Dengeki Online interviewed the creators of the controversial sex comedy Ishuzoku Reviewers, author Amahara and mangaka Masha. The interview mainly covered the design of one of the most peculiar characters in the series, Crimvael, as well as the censorship that was used in the transmission of the anime through local television.
Crimvael is an angel whose halo was broken when he fell from Heaven. After being rescued by Stunk and Zel, Crimvael began working at the Ale & Eats bar, alongside the waitress Meidri. Crimvael is a hermaphrodite, and he feels ashamed for being the most ‘gifted’ of the group. According to the creators, there were internal discussions from the beginning about the character design, but they were quite surprised when they saw the uncensored version of the anime, which could clearly see the silhouette of the Crimvael member in his pants.
The creators revealed that the decision to expose Crimvael’s characteristics in the anime fell to the production team, guided by character designer Makoto Uno. One also served as animation director, so his role in the anime is understandable. final character designs and how they would appear in the anime.
Amahara revealed that Uno’s direction and ideas were very important during the production of the anime and it was he who was in charge of the censorship of Crimvael’s crotch. The author indicated that Uno would use the well-known resource of the luminous balloon to cover it, after the mangaka Masha confirmed that the ‘package’ of Crimvael had been drawn in the sketches for the anime, he gave his approval for the use of censorship in the version for national television stations.
The Ishuzoku Reviewers manga, written by Amahara and illustrated by Masha, has been published in the monthly magazine Monthly Dragon Age, of the Kadokawa publishing house, since August 2016. The Passione studio was in charge of the animated adaptation of the series that was released in January 2020, directed by Yuki Ogawa and scripts by Kazuyuki Fudeyasu.
