With the 25th anniversary of the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime just around the corner, the Japanese Mint issued a statement that surprised all fans and collectors of the popular franchise.
The story of Neon Genesis Evangelion presents us with a world almost devastated by a cataclysmic event caused by humans, and that has unleashed the wrath of God. As a defense against the avenging emissaries of the Most High, humanity develops a mechanized biological weapon: The Evangelion (or EVAs). To pilot them, young people born during or after the disaster that almost wiped out the human population are needed. The series originally premiered on October 4, 1995 and broke records, subsequently becoming a cult object around the world.
As a tribute, the Japan Mint will circulate 20,000 limited packs with a special set of mirror-finished test coins, containing the six denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 yen. They will include a silver medal colored with the NERV logo and Unit 01, and will be contained in a special leather-lined case. The price for this set is 13,700 yen ($ 129), including tax and shipping.
In addition, 50,000 sets of regular circulation coins will be offered that will include a tombac (a copper and zinc alloy) medal with the engraved figures of the characters Shinki Ikari and Rei Ayanami. Its price is more affordable: 2,500 yen ($ 24), including taxes and shipping.
These sets can be ordered through the virtual store of the Japan Mint, or by mail order until September 17. Starting in November, they will be available in all the official stores of the franchise as well as in the virtual catalogs for sales abroad.
