Russia put a stop to the broadcast of the anime through the well-known streaming platform Crunchyroll. Through its Federal Agency Roskomnadzor (in charge of telecommunications and media in Russia), Vladimir Putin’s government blocked access to the Crunchyroll website.
Although it was still possible to access the platform via its mobile application, Russia has also banned the broadcast of a number of series that Crunchyroll offers to its subscribers. These include Darling in the Franxx, OreImo, Tenshi # 3P, Girly Air Force, Konohana Kitan, and Tsugumomo.
Several Russian otakus revealed on social media the motive behind Crunchyroll’s ban. Apparently, the platform was broadcasting animes without having the proper tags that indicated the type of content in the series. So anyone could watch anime without restriction, even if there were adult themes included. That was not to the liking of the Russian Roskomnadzor officers, who gave Crunchyroll the restrictive chop.
This is another episode in the plight of anime in Russia. In recent months, several series (Death Note, Inuyashiki, Tokyo Ghoul, etc.) have been banned because they are considered dangerous due to the violence portrayed in them. Not even isekai anime have been spared, as Russia believes that they convey the dangerous message of finding a better life after dying and reincarnating in another reality.
