The name Madhouse is known to all otaku, inside and outside of Japan. It is one of the oldest and most prolific Japanese animation studios (48 years in business), whose facilities have sheltered (and continue to do so) fantastic creators of the most iconic contemporary anime titles. And this list covers ten of the best animes that this animation house has given us.
1. Death Note (2006)
A high school student accidentally comes across a Shinigami’s notebook. Upon discovering that he is capable of killing whoever he wants just by writing the victim’s name, he decides to change the world by deciding who lives and who dies. But his actions, which do not go unnoticed, incite an enigmatic researcher to pursue him tirelessly.
2. Hunter X Hunter (1999)
A boy wants to follow in the footsteps of his father, a renowned Hunter. The Hunters are humans with extraordinary abilities, and specialized in almost impossible searches (rare animals, lost treasures, dangerous criminals, etc.), but who receive a license to be able to work as such. To obtain such a license, the young person and the other candidates must pass a very rigorous and extremely dangerous annual examination.
3. One-Punch Man (2015)
In an Earth besieged by monsters, the Hero Association is the only thing preventing human extinction. Among the ranks of numerous heroes, one of them stands out for his amazing ability: he can defeat the most powerful monsters with a single punch.
4. Parasyte: The Maxim (2014)
A young high school student discovers that a mysterious alien organism has joined him. As he thinks about how to get out of that situation, more parasites start to appear that want to possess and devour him. To survive, the boy and his new partner decide to join forces and fight the other parasites.
5. Hajime no Ippo (2000)
A very shy boy is rescued from a gang of bullies by a professional boxer. When he takes the boy to his gym to tend to his injuries, he discovers his amazing natural talent for boxing.
6. Monster (2004)
The life of a Japanese surgeon living in Germany will be involved in a dangerous odyssey to stay alive. The reason? One of his closest patients turns out to be a fearsome serial killer.
7. Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei (2010)
A university student, unhappy with his current life, explores the possibilities of a future life using parallel universes as a tool.
8. Hellsing (2001)
The Hellsing organization (named after a legendary monster hunter) has as its mission and rationale the utter destruction of the undead and other supernatural threats. His new slogan is to end the efforts of the fanatic group Millenium, which seeks to create an army of vampires to subdue humanity.
9. Trigun 1998
A gunman and two insurance agents are chased by a criminal gang trying to collect a reward. Along the way, they are assisted by a parish priest, who is also very skilled with firearms.
10. Nana (2006)
Two women, who share the same name but differ in personality and lifestyle, end up living together in an apartment when they move to Tokyo. Both will face many adversities side by side; one seeking fame and recognition, and the other, love and happiness.
